Abstract
Dysphagia in the elderly can result from a normal aging process that can cause a subtle slowing of swallow process and remain asymptomatic. However, a variety of disorders such as neurodegenerative disorders, dementia, structural lesions and medication effects often contribute to symptomatic swallowing difficulty. Also systemic disease such as vasculitis or connective tissue diseases which show increased incidence in the elderly may lead to dysphagia. When the elderly presents with progressive dysphagia due to undefined causes accompanied with red flag signs such as weight loss, recurrent aspiration pneumonia, one should evaluate the underlying systemic diseases, including vasculitis and occult malignancies that could contribute to this condition. We report a unique case of debilitating dysphagia in an elderly patient that was attributable to remote effects of an occult early prostate cancer presenting as paraneoplastic vasculitic neuropathy and which showed improvement only after medical treatment of the malignancy.
